DVDpedia App Reviews
Splendid
This app is splendid!!! Its THE app to organize DVD & other. And most helpful to scan bar codes with iSight
DVDpedia has a lot of interfaces to websites, most notably IMDB. Also, each user can easily adpapt the app to his own purposes. In that respect, DVDpedia beats all competitors. Support is also excellent.
This is an awesome piece of software. It is easy to install, easy to use, very user-friendly, very intutitive. There is documentation and a forum with useful additional tips if you want to look for more. It seems well written. I have downloaded some customizations available on their web, and have downloaded the upgrade subsequently, nothing was lost and there was no issue at all (one should expect things to run smoothly, but in my long experience with many softwares it has rarely been the case). I have entered over 800 items without problem. It populates information automatically. There are nice features and I keep finding little gems, such as one can drag and drop cover art or links, one can link an item to another item in the library (for example if you want to link items from series with same theme). You can add custom fields extremely easily, and plenty are provided. Taking a picture with iSight for your cover art is only a couple of clicks (no download needed). There is also a nice integration with Front Row available from another user. You can manage your borrowed items (there is even a pic of the person who borrowed them from you).
And definitely easy to install and use. I lost all my KAVA Movies Info but fortunately I had saved a list of the movies (just the titles, nothing else). I was able to import that list into DVDpedia. Unfortunately, there is no way to update info for several movies at once, so I have to go one by one and update with the info from IMDb (my site option, there are several other sites offered for updating). Unfortunately, not all the fields update for a movie, particularly the "rating" as shown in IMDb (I can SEE the rating on the webpage, for some reason DVDpedia just doesnt update it). Overall, not a bad application, simple to use, with several fun options, but also with several limitations. I hope future upgrades will make it better
Excellent
I have tried most of the cataloguing software for Movies and TV Series and this, in my humble opinion, is the best.
I have been using Bookpedia for years and have been quite happy with it. Bookpedia pretty much does what I expect it to and allows manual entry of product codes. DVDpedia does neither. Worse yet, the current version frequently hangs showing “not responding” in system status. When it does work, it appears to be increadibly slow. Yes, my network connection is working just fine. I have over 15Mbps available to me, and I am currently listening to streaming audio. (Yes, DVDpedia is failing when I am not running iTunes.) My network connection is not down. For some unfathonable reason, DVDpedia does not search Amazon and does not appear to be able to deal with Region 0 DVDs. I doubt that it will fuction with region 2 DVDs or any other non-American/Canadian region number. Note. I have a 13 in Macbook Pro Retna that I bought less than a month ago.
Does to much for me. Adds movies quite nicely but after that it is difficult to find a view that you can read. I really wanted just a simple view in order to look at my collectio. So many options that it is difficult to find one that works.
Years ago I took a thorough look at all of the cataloging apps I could find. In the end I chose DVDpedia. I am still very happy with this program and it continues to surprise me (in a good way). Every time I think of something new I want to do with my data, I generally can find a way to do it with DVDpedia. The really good, key features for me are the auto-incrementing CollectionID number and the fact that you can define custom fields with default values. You can also define a list of auto-fill values for all fields. In other words, you are not completely locked into the developers way of doing things. Also, some standard export options are provided so that your database doesnt get trapped in this program should it go away down the road. Unfortunately, the companion iOS app seems to have been abandoned. In spite of that, DVDpedia is a great app (and I rarely give glowing reviews.) So far I have not seen any problems with the database conversion to version 5.
"Guess the title says it all - I paid for 5.0 but didnt get it." Turns out I did… wouldnt you think thered be a check list of things to check before sending in a submission with make sure the version number is correct maybe the last thing on it in really really big letters?:) Works great.
I have looked at several movie cataloging apps, (including Delicious) and this is the best I have found. - lots of import options, including iSight camera, text files, other app databases, and internet search - several ways to update data from several popular sources - lots of printing options for reports - instant statistics on just about any piece ofmeta data across your entire (or portion) of your collection - custom fields - you can turn off fields you arent interested in - edit mulitple records at once - LOTS of sort and export options - even a mobile HTML optimized format! - you can create "Smart" collections (searches) based on your own criteria - there is a companion iOS app (which is not on the app store right now) so you can take your database with you (in the meantime the PDF exports work well on iOS) - fast and stable - several views and many ways to customize the interface to suit your needs I have a collection of over 1,000 movies and this program has handled everything I have tried to do with it.
It does what it says but implies it does more. I expected the program to provide additional info such as show titles on BOXXED SETS besides just the series title. I own complete series of tvshows & movies & I expected the program to provide the listings of the shows on the disk but very sadly it does not.
It took me a long time to find this app, but it works great. I have been able to catalog my harddrive of movies in different formats and download the movie information on the titles. Its perfect, I highly recommend this app!
Great for Cataloging but does not Play Video
Great app, great features, but only for Cataloging Movies. This is not a Movie Player
Great idea, poor execution. This app is so buggy that it cannot even scan an external hard drive without crashing. Fort $18.99 this app is a complete waste of money. They should be ashamed of theirselves offering zero tech support to fix these bugs. I want a complete refund.
This app works great once you play around with it and learn the search capabilities and how to save the files to excel spread sheets. The only issue I found was the automated movie title search would often return wrong the movies especially if you did not include the release date in parenthesis with your search. my solution was to add a release year or manually search the title with IMDB.
I bought this program for my wife’s use based on its supposed capability of using a bar code scanner for item entry and then retreiving information about the entry automatically. What was not known to me is that you have to jump through hoops to access the Amazon database that is standard with Delicious Library. Granted this program will allow a lot of data to be associated with each entry, but this feature is over shadowed by the lack of ease of use. And as most people know, if momma win;t happy, no one is happy. SO, again, save your money… get Delicious… you will be far happier…..
Purchased 4 or 5 prior to DVDpedia, which is by far superior to the others. Its search engine is great, and vary rarely will you have to enter your own entry. No bugs that shut it down, something that occurred far too often with the others. Just wished there was an easy way to send info to my iPhone. Very easy to edit and add information. One issue is that sometimes the search bar doesnt cooperate. Easy fix, just hit the magnifying glass, which drops down to show all the options available.
crashing issues
When I try to import files from my exteranl drive the program crashes. This bug needs to be fixed. I would expect more from an app that cost $19.
Ive been looking for a decent video catalog for a few years now. This one is a bit pricey (probably one of the main complaints about it). Other than that, its a great app. It has a slew of import options that worked without issue for me, auto-update features to about 15-20 external sites like The TVdB, The Movie Db, IMDB, etc. The views are very iTunes like, with an easy search feature and a customizable toolbar. Also has loan options to track discs you loan out, and options to generate emails to those folks automatically or manualy reminding them of the loan. From a support perspective, teh Buji folks are very responsive. They answer questions quickly and tend to address bugs quickly. I do wisjh it would incorporate storage for the library in your cloud drive. It’s not very multi-computer friendly. Although it has a corresponding mobile app, you must sync the app with the primary mac while on the same wifi network. Sync options are not available at any other time. You also can’t manage your library from multiple computers which is a drawback. Overall a great app. If you are looking for a video disc library software, this is the one that should fit your basic needs. For the high price, and the lacking cloud features, I gave it a 4 out of 5.
